CATALOGUE NOTE:

These Zande figures are known as Yanda, represented ancestral or protective spirits who looked over the Zande Mani cult members. Wel being aspects included health, wealth, happiness and protection from sorcery. Yanda figures were either carved of wood or shaped out of clay, and were used by the Bandakpa, or senior male members of Mani. Yanda figures were kept in small shrines outside the village. An unusual nuance of the Yanda figure is that appearance notwithstanding, the Azande believe that the real potency of a Yanda figure was based on how well consecrated the wood from which the figure was carved was, before it was used to carve the Yanda. The Mani cult was made up of men and women, and its role was to bring health, wealth and prosperity for the cult member, cure illnesses, and forestall spells or to cast spells or attach a witch to an enemy. Zande sculpture was also thought to be related to that of their neighbors the Ngbaka and the Ngbande.
