Due to their practical utility, horse-hair fly whisks are commonly found all over Africa. In this superb specimen from the Makonde, the handle is surmounted with an anthropomorphic female figurine cradling full breasts. More than practical utility however, a horse-hair fly whisk can also be a prestige item sometimes fashioned with handles made out of wood, ivory or even metal and even adorned sometimes adorned with leather, fabric, beads, etc. As prestige items, they accessorize costumes worn by chiefs and titled elders who often own several whisks, and often use them to accentuate gestures and their presence at festivals, rituals, and at other important public appearances.
