CATALOGUE NOTE:
The Kumu people inhibit the western edges of the Ituri rainforest in Democratic Republic of Congo. Form an African art aspect, the Kumu are largely known for their masks, which have only become known to collectors over the last quarter century, mostly as a result of the influx of foreign aide workers in the region. Little is known about the use of these masks, however it is believed that they were worn in circumcision rituals as well as after the death of a diviner and were kept in huts until they were needed.
