The Fipa are located in the western side of Lake Tanganyika, which is technically the Democratic Republic of Congo. Carved from light colored woods that are darkened with either paint or vegetal matters, this genre of initiation Fipa masks is characterized by its crude asymmetrical features and finish, in a tradition commonly found in southern Africa. Like the Holoholo and the Mambwe peoples, Fipa aesthetics are also believed to have been influenced by the Tabwa.
