Artists throughout eastern Liberia and western Ivory Coast have carved freestanding figures of important woman in wood. These figures were carved for wealthy patrons, often idealizing portraits of the wife of the man commissioning the work, and were regarded as prestige items, and Dan owners were known to charge fees to visitors who wished to see them.
