Symbolizing a mother of twins, this striking and most unusual maternity figure from the Chokwe peoples of Angola (and Zambia) is quite a rarity of Chokwe art. The style is considered similar to the Dinga peoples, and it was very like employed during the Chokwe hamba cult rituals linked to divination practices. Often found in shrines, or at least considered sacrosanct, maternity figures holding or nursing infants are as common as they are diversified in their portrayal in African wood sculptures. From style to imagery and size, maternity veneration is a theme found in almost every African carving tradition. Although usually portrayed with mature physical features, African maternity figures are often depicted to reflect each ethnic regions traits of beauty, strength and wisdom.
