IBEJI TWIN FIGURE

TRIBE: YORUBA

COUNTRY: NIGERIA

14" Tall x 4" Wide

The Yoruba believe that the birth of twins is a blessing bestowed by the spirit to bring to the family good fortune.  If a twin dies at birth, a carving is representing the soul of that twin is carved to be kept by the mother who would carry it tucked in her belt or waist cloth.  These figures are carefully guarded and duly blessed by the priest at the annual festival of the twins.
