Belonging to the Sapi kingdom, which collapsed in the 1th century, the Kissi carved these stome Pombo figures, wrapped them in cloth and placed them on small altars or in deep bowls with other amulets where they would worship them. According to Kissi belief, they are thought to at as intermediaries with their ancestors. The spi stone carvings all appear to date from etween the 13th and 18th centuries and measure from 8cm to 40cm.
*this item hasn't been tested for age, however is consistent with Sapi stone sculpture from early centuries. |
