These sculptural knives, known as Sengese, were particularly prominent among the Matakam who lived in the Mandara Mountain region. These knives were used to fight off Arab slave traders in many conflicts that were exstent during the first quarter of the twentieth century. Today, men carry Sengese during ceremonies or social gatherings to indicate status. |
