The Makonde Lipico masks are made of light balsa like wood, are traditionally adorned with human hair, and worn with a cloth tied around the bottom rim that loosely falls over the masquerader. The masks are used in invitation ceremonies, called Lipico, for both boys and girls. Within an initiation ceremony, boys were forced to overpower the masquerader and unmask the Lipico.
