Maasai women wear these ear pendants only after they are married. Beads, which were made from various local materials but for over a hundred years have been imported, are sewn to a folded piece of leather. Buttons and iron staples are also found. The bright colors are particularly striking against the shaved or closely shorn heads that are typical among these women.
