The Kete are a sub-group of the Kuba. This Kete mask with its extended beard, a cross between the iconic Bushong and Pwoom Itok genres, is a variant of the group known among the Bushoong as “Bwoom” masks. While evident overlapping identical stylistic characteristics suggest that the peoples of the central and south central Democratic Republic of Congo (the Salampasu and Lwalwa for example) greatly influenced each other’s artistic forms, pure “Bwoom” masks are more typical of the Kuba genre. Kete masks are most associated with initiation contexts.
