Originally formed from a hoe blade, these currency items were known as 'Akika' to the Idoma of Nigeria. They used these during ceremonies and in family negotiations for a bride. Iron had value thoughout Africa as it could easy be melted and converted into a number of different tools that were necessary in day to day life, so though the Akika had meaning to the Idoma for bride negotiations, it was pretty practical as a broad base currency to them too. |
