These ancestors figures were kept by the Fumu Mwalo, or hereditary chief of each Hemba clan. These figures were believed to confer power onto him. During ruitual ceremonies he would communicate with the figures, by recalling significant events from their life and paying homage to him with the sacrifice of an animal.
