This female figure is carved on a large post to allow her to be seen by all. It is a public figure, carved by a sculptor to demonstrate his skill and to celebrate the beauty of Igbo women. The sculpture represent the ideals of Igbo beliefs in beauty and good character, and the need for each to reflect the other. Sculptures like this carved figure will often have their bodies patterned with scarification, after local traditions. She embodies the spirit and ideals of beauty among the Igbo of Nigeria.
