CATALOGUE NOTE:
These Dan carvings were commissioned by powerful chiefs and are known as 'lu me' were not ancestor figures, but are rather stylized representations of an actual individual, with close attention paid to their hairstyle, body markings and physical form of the favorite spouse. These figures were kept hidden inside houses and only displayed on important occasions suck as during visits by foreign dignitaries.

The Dan, who are also known as the Yacouba, live in the western Cote d'Ivoire and into Liberia. They make their living farming cocoa, rice and manioc. dan people have achieved notoriety for their entertainment festivals which were historically village ceremonies.
