The Baule are one of the few people who, in African art, have statuettes depicting a spirit spouse who lives in a parallel world and manifests itself out of jealously, giving rise to impotence or sterility in the living partner. The male version of this is known as the Blolo Bian. In order to ingratiate himself with this spirit, a person has an effigy made which will become its dwelling place. This is why the sculpture takes the form of the ideal physical specimen and includes embellishments found in life: charming curves, fine scarification's and a glowing skin. The sculpted beard, known as akanza tèndèn depicts status.
