Ancestral Figure

Tribe: Bembe
Country: Democratic Republic of Congo
Material: Wood, Pigment
Size: 10.75"

The Bembe carved figures and domestic fetishes in different postures, with an elongated torso decorated with tribal scarification patterns.  Bone glass or pigment was often used as eyes and the face often was decorated with  a beard.  The palms of the male figures were turned toward each other or upward if they were not carrying any objects. These Bembe African art sculptures served religious purposes, and were to maintain contact with the deceased. It was believed that as long as the spirit lived within the statue, it watched over its decendants and punished those that broke tribal custom.

Mr.
My collection started in 1974 with a Bambara ancestral figure. This Bembe figure interest me because Bembe is a tribe of Belgian former colony Congo. But mind: neither I myself or any member of my family ever went to Congo. I like this ancestral figure because of its high expression of the face.
