Description

Aghogho Mask

Tribe: Ibo
Country: Nigeria
Material: Wood, Pigment
Size:

The Aghogho masks of the Ibo represent the maiden spirit and was used by the Mmwo society.  The masked dancers wore costumes of brightly colored patchwork pants and blouses, with their hands and feet covered, and appeared at funerals.  The masked dancers did not merely represent, but believed to be the spirits of teh dead.  They disguised their voices, aiming, as in so many African burial ceremonies, to induce the dead man's spirit to enter the spirit world (ebe mno) so as to avoid any harm to the survivors.
