Tribe: Chokwe Counrty: Angola / Democratic Republic of Congo Material: Wood Size: 14.5" Note: Chip in the bottom lip.
The chihongo
mask is viewed as the manifestation of an ancestor spirit, and is
believed to embody the spirit of the deceased person. It stands for
prosperity and male power, forming a complementary figure to the pwo
mask with its embodiment of female traits and beauty. Many Chokwe
groups emphasize the royal qualities of this mask, which formerly was
permitted to be danced and kept only by a chief or his sons.
